    Roof Replacement Update
    Posted on: 09/13/2019

    Dear Firebird families and staff:

Work continues to progress with Phase 1 of our Roof Replacement project at Rising Star Elementary School at the African American Academy. Demolition activities are complete and new materials are being installed. As noted in my prior communication, this will allow us to reoccupy vacated areas on November 16, 2019. Phase 2 of the Roof Replacement project will begin when school lets out next spring and should be complete prior to students returning Fall 2020.

We continue to work closely with representatives from the district’s Capital Projects Department, Wayne’s Roofing, and Stemper Architectural Collaborative to monitor the progress of the work, discuss issues that arise, and confirm that the school building remains safe for students and staff during the roof replacement project. Please know that all project team members recognize that the safety of our students, our staff, and our community is their number one priority.

While the roof is being repaired, some upstairs classrooms have been relocated to other parts of the building. Staff and students have adjusted to their new classroom settings, and teaching and learning is their focus.

If you have any questions regarding our Roof Replacement project or student, staff or community safety, please contact Mark Emelko, mmemelko@seattleschools.org, our capital project manager, or me directly.

Thank you for your patience as we complete this project.
